Background information:

Chan Buddhism was introduced to Japan in the 12th century, where it became known as Zen. Dōgen Zenji, often known simply as Dōgen, was an eminent Japanese Zen master and founded the Sōtō school of Zen, which emphasized the practice of zazen (seated meditation).

In the following centuries, Zen flourished in Japan and strongly influenced the country's culture and art. In modern times, Zen has also become popular in the West and has gained a global following. Various schools and styles of Zen have developed, including Sōtō, Rinzai and Sanbo Kyodan.

Zen meditation has a long and rich history that is closely linked to Buddhism in China and Japan. It has had a profound effect on the spiritual practice and daily life of many people around the world.
